What Is the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP)?

You may want a souvenir to remember an event, conference, seminar, or some other gathering you attended that was particularly memorable. This could be a name badge from a conference you attended with other employees or a ticket stub from a movie you saw in theaters.

Well, something new is filling the gap: the proof of attendance protocol.

Proof of attendance protocol is a non-fungible token (NFT) that proves you have attended an in-person or virtual event. These digital stickers or badges are sent to your wallet as a reward for attending these events.

How Do POAPs Work?

Event planners and attendees can use the POAP website to organize or join events. Even though it is free to organize events, planners can charge a fee for admission if they so desire. You use your location data or scan a QR code to check in when you get to the event. This creates an attendance record with a timestamp safely recorded in a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain.

There are two primary participant groups in play when it comes to POAP events.

1. Event Planners

The event planners organize events, fundraisers, and conferences with POAPs. They can apply POAPs to secure digital signatures or validate academic credentials. Meanwhile, POAP NFTs can serve as entry tickets and prizes for event activities.

Event planners can earn from their activities by charging fees using POAP. They may advertise their events on social media and event management platforms to expand their audience.

2. Event Attendees

A digital badge is given to each attendee at any location or event that offers a POAP NFT as a souvenir. Attendees only need to scan the QR code on the badge with their devices or a device provided by the event to view the information recorded. The POAPs of attendees are updated either remotely through location detection or directly on-site by scanning the QR code.

Brands and Companies That Have Used the Proof of Attendance Protocol

Several major brands and companies have used the Proof of Attendance Protocol to plan events and engage community members. Here are some brands that have employed POAPs.

Estée Lauder

Acclaimed beauty brand Estée Lauder unveiled a unique NFT wearable, Advanced Night Repair, at the Metaverse Fashion Week held between March 23-27, 2022.

They distributed 10,000 free Advanced Night Repair NFTs for the event. This allowed users to claim an NFT wearable to give their avatars a unique luminous aura and receive a Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) badge by virtually entering the Advanced Night Repair “Little Brown Bottle.”

In November 2021, Adidas launched CONFIRMED, an app for drops and exclusive content to POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol).

Adidas’ POAP serves as a way to recognize its most devoted supporters—users of the CONFIRMED app—rather than commemorating any particular event.

Lottie London

Lottie London organized the first metaverse prom party on Decentraland to celebrate party prom season and interact with its Gen Z audience. This event started on May 25, 2022.

Prom party participants could fully immerse themselves in the event thanks to the Proof of Attendance Protocol that directed users to the Lottie London Walmart shopping website. Unfortunately, it was only available to the first 2,000 attendees.

How to Set Up a Proof of Attendance Protocol for an Event

Before creating a Proof of Attendance Protocol for your attendees, you’ll need an image to put on it. The graphic file must be in a PNG or GIF format, no larger than 200 kb. It’s recommended to keep the image measurement to 500 x 500 pixels, with a round shape.

Here are the step-by-step instructions for creating a POAP for your event.

  1. Visit POAP and click Create your first POAP. If you have any questions, consult POAP’s guide.
  2. On the next page, there will be a form. Fill out the form with the necessary information.
  3. Input the event you are commemorating, what you want people to remember about the POAP drop, the essence of the POAP, and the location of the POAP event.
  4. Tick the Virtual Drop box if the event is virtual, and fill out the city and country fields if you want to.
  5. Next, input the POAP drop’s start, end, and expiry dates. Note that you can’t input an end date if you do not check the multi-day drop box.
  6. Input your website link if you have a website that you would want your attendees to visit to claim their POAPs. Leave the template field as a Standard template.
  7. Next, Choose the file containing the artwork or image for your POAP. Remember that every POAP must have an image in PNG or GIF format.
  8. Copy the edit code. This code is important if you want to modify the POAP.
  9. Enter your email address and how many mints links you need, and click Save.
  10. A pop-up will confirm that you’ve successfully submitted your POAP drop to the Curation Body for review and approval.
  11. You can fill out the Curation Review Supplemental Info form if you wish to expedite the Curation Body review process.
  12. After a successful review, you will receive a confirmation mail. The POAP for your event has now been officially created.

How to Claim a POAP as an Attendee

Participating in a POAP-sponsored event or experience will give you a link or QR code to claim a POAP NFT using the address of your Ethereum wallet. Alternatively, you can input your email address and claim your POAP NFT later.

It’s important to remember that POAPs aren’t limited to real-world events; you can also access them virtually. Be mindful of QR codes if you’re attending a recognized POAP event. You can check publicly listed POAPs on the POAP event page if you are interested in forthcoming POAP-sponsored events.

Should You Use the Proof of Attendance Protocol at Your Next Event?

Proof of Attendance Protocol is currently in its very early stages, and its application isn’t well known to most people. As more event planners experiment with POAP, its popularity will likely evolve beyond storing lived experiences and verifying attendance.

POAPs give event planners an easy way to hand out digital souvenirs at important events. Furthermore, POAP NFTs help individuals and groups in recording notable achievements.
