TL;DR

  • Google has reportedly sold 27.7 million phones since the launch of the Pixel line in 2016.
  • The number is reportedly one-tenth of Samsung’s 2021 sales alone.

It’s the day of the Pixel launch, and all things point to a broader launch for the new Google flagships. The company has confirmed that the Pixel 7 series is entering some new markets this time around, so it seems Google is pushing to sell more phones. The company never shares statistics on how many handsets it sells, but third-party data suggest the Android maker has shipped about 27.6 million Pixels so far. That’s not even thirty million phones since the launch of the Pixel line in 2016!

The data comes from Bloomberg’s Vlad Savov, who sourced the numbers from research firm IDC. You may be shocked if you see the comparison between Google’s numbers and those of the leading Android phone maker — Samsung. As Vlad points out, Google’s Pixel sales are just a fraction of Samsung’s 2021 sales. He says it would take Google 60 years to sell as many phones as Samsung sells in a single year.

Since Google launched Pixel phones in 2016, it’s sold 27.6 million units. That’s 1/10 of Samsung’s 2021 sales. In other words, Google would need 60 years to sell as many phones as Samsung sells in one.

Data: IDC

Samsung is not the only Android OEM selling many more phones than Google. Even Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo shipped a whole lot more devices compared to Google in 2021. Of course, all these OEMs have been in the smartphone game for much longer and sell devices in multiple markets and price ranges. So it may not be fair to compare Google to the other Android OEMs just yet.

It’s also important to note that Google is improving and possibly seeing growth in its smartphone portfolio. In April, the company confirmed that the Pixel 6 series had become its fastest-selling smartphone line ever. This was a notable achievement for Google considering the Pixel 6 series launched in very limited markets. With Google expanding its market presence this time, the Pixel 7 series could break more records for the firm.
